Photography has come to shape our culture and the way we see the world. Until recently it was inconceivable that the line separating disciplines such as painting and etching from photography could ever be crossed. The wealth of possibilities photography has to offer was explored by the participants of this year’s Polish-American photography workshop in Monastir, Tunisia (January 7-14, 2010), lead by Dr. Mariusz Dąbrowski from Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in Poland and Dr. Justine Price from Art History Department at Canisius College.

In Remembrance Of Katyn

April 14th, 2010 PJ Moskal No comments

A screening of Katyn, a film by Andrzej Wajda, will be held on Friday, April 16 at 3 p.m., in Regis Room North to celebrate the lives of the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and more than 90 political, army, church, and community leaders killed in the plane crash on April 10, 2010.  The official delegation was on their way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the massacre in Katyn and other nearby regions, where the Russian Secret Police murdered over 20,000 Polish Army officers and intellectuals at the beginning of the World War II.

The event has been of utmost importance because recently the Russian government admitted to committing the crime which for a long time was attributed to the Germans.  For additional information about the film, please contact Margaret Stefanski, PhD, at stefansm@canisius.edu.

Play/Share Buffalo is looking for participants!

March 25th, 2010 PJ Moskal 1 comment

play/share buffalo is a pervasive game to be played between the real
streets of Buffalo and a fantastic alternative-history city. It is
also an outreach project for “Alternating Currents” the 2010 Beyond/In
Western New York Exhibition.  play/share buffalo is looking for people
to imagine and  design play/shares (missions for the game).

We’re looking for all kinds of people from a variety of disciplines –
students, professionals, artists, engineers, actors, and dreamers –
who are interested in designing missions that are Buffalo site-
specific. You’re invited to use mobile phones, Twitter, video,
puzzles, GPS, humor, theater, computer vision, sound, and audience
involvement to help imagine an alternate history of Buffalo, while
getting players out into the city to the many “Alternating Currents”
locations.

If you’re interested in learning more about how to design a puzzle for
the game, we are holding a general information meeting on Thursday,
April 1.

WHAT: play/share buffalo designer general meeting.
WHEN: Thurs. April 1 @ 6 PM
WHERE: Burchfield Penney Art Center, second floor conference room.

We hope you’ll join us to learn more about how you can play with us!

DMAC Presentation Series

January 25th, 2010 PJ Moskal No comments

Dear Students,

I hope you had good break and your semester is off to a good start.

Following Mr. Dunkle’s suggestion, I would like to start a series of presentations conducted by students and faculty about a topic of your choice (most likely related to art and technology). The presentations would be rather concise, between 30 min. to an hour, and would be followed by a discussion.

Let’s meet for the first time this Wednesday, January 27 at noon, just like last semester. If this time doesn’t work for people we will then change to another time. We probably won’t be able to accommodate everybody’s schedule and will simply go with majority. As always, we will meet in the DMA lounge next to DMA Web Lab on the 3rd floor of Lyons.

I will kick off the series this Wednesday at noon with a presentation titled “Building Virtual Cities with Google SketchUp”. We will take a look at 3D modeling application called Google SketchUp and we will connect to Google Earth where we will place our virtual models. You are invited!

If you own a laptop you can bring it with you and follow along. Download Google SketchUp (http://sketchup.google.com) and Google Earth (http://earth.google.com) for free prior to the presentation.

If you have any questions or ideas for a presentation, just e-mail me moskalp@canisius.edu

Regards,
PJ Moskal
